NEWMARKET — A local firefighter is on paid administrative leave following his arrest on an aggravated felonious sexual assault charge involving a juvenile.

Joshua Gilbert, 48, was arrested by Stratham police April 1, when he turned himself in on an outstanding warrant for allegedly sexually assaulting a juvenile victim sometime between 2013 and 2017, Police Chief Anthony King said.

Gilbert was released on personal recognizance bail and he is scheduled to be arraigned in Rockingham County Superior Court May 6.

King confirmed his agency is conducting the investigation “as a courtesy” to Newmarket police. He said the investigation remains ongoing to determine if there are any additional alleged incidents.

Town Manager Steve Fournier said Gilbert, one of the town’s two full-time firefighters, will remain on paid administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation.

He said the decision to transfer the investigation to Stratham police was to “make sure there was no appearance of any conflict of interest.”
